jornada de puertas abiertas online

Normally, open days are in January or February, but the pandemic has given way to a school context full of uncertainty. The time has come to see what alternatives we have to face this difficult situation. The solution is clear: our best ally will be the online world, a safe place full of possibilities.

Videoconferences, social networks, virtual tours, zoom meetings..., we hope these concepts are familiar to you because they will mark a turning point in the way schools will have to promote themselves from now on and for at least a long time to come.

The suspension of classes and closure of schools to prevent the effects of the coronavirus at the start of the pandemic caused the pre-registration process in schools to be postponed until further notice. Moreover, we will not deny that the start of the new school year is being, at least, strange: confined classes, uneven schedules, change of routines, playgrounds without group games...

That is why the open days have taken second place to the priorities for the experts in educational centres, given that, right now, the most important thing is to ensure that schools can continue with the lessons and the school calendar as effectively as possible, within the context we are living in.

Schools are forced to use their imagination, given the irresponsibility of gathering a large group of parents to walk around a school in total freedom and without following the recommendations of the authorities. Here are some examples of what you can do to promote your school and convince those parents that your facilities, your values, your teaching team and your educational project are the ones they should be betting on.

Interactive open days on your social networks

We start with the main course and the one that usually surprises the most. Some schools and universities abroad have already tried it and are obtaining important results. This is the example of the Dutch Radboud University, one of the most reputable in Europe, which decided to make its tour interactive via Instagram.

Here we leave you with some photographs of what they did, but basically they generated surveys so that users could choose which route their official account would take. Questions such as "Where do you want to go now?" served as a clue for the organizers as to which facilities were of most interest to the attendees. They made videos touring the campus or photographs showing their classrooms. Interesting, isn't it?

Edited videos

There are those who are committed to the audiovisual format in these matters in order to create a much more dynamic content that reaches more audiences, given that some parents may not be as familiar with the above-mentioned social networks. Here is a small example of a video showing the facilities of a school. As you can see, the image quality is not very good, but it can serve to inspire us. In case you are not a professional in video editing or shooting, you should know that there are many agencies willing to offer you help. Investing in this aspect today is more than a suggestion, it is a necessity.

Record the classes, the courtyard, the teachers' room, the offices, the corridors... There is no better way to show our school than in full motion! You can also add transition effects, sound effects, background music... or intersperse it with student and teacher interventions to make it more familiar, entertaining and above all, fun.

Zoom meetings for possible doubts

Many parents may want to intervene, give suggestions or ask questions of the teachers about their methodologies or work routines. In this case, the online meetings to which we are so accustomed with the Homeoffice would be a perfect example of what we need to do. Arrange a day, a time when you think more parents can attend and promote it on your social networks in advance. It wouldn't be a bad idea to convene representatives of parents or teachers by course to make the meeting more orderly and dynamic. In addition, you can offer the possibility of recording the session, so that those who have not been able to watch it can do so at their leisure.

What do you think of these ideas? We hope you will put them into practice and that they will work.
